Crested Butte Fire Protection District

CBFPD is a Colorado Special District that provides fire protection, prevention, rescue and EMS services in the greater Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte and surrounding area.

Board of Directors: Consists of 5 members (see Contacts).

Service Area: CBFPD is composed of about 250 square miles, and includes the greater area of Crested Butte proper, Mt. Crested Butte, Crested Butte South, Riverland, Riverbend, Gothic and many other subdivisions and developments from approximately the East River Bridge (near Hwy 135 mile marker 18) to the south, Schofield Pass to the north, Kebler Pass to the west and Pearl Pass to the east.

District Configuration: We have a base population of about 2,500 people, and swells to nearly 10,000 at the peak of ski periods and other vacation/tourist periods during the summer, fall and winter seasons.

Membership Profile: Consists of paid division heads and administrators, plus approximately 40 volunteer fire fighters and 25 volunteer EMS personnel. There are about 20% of the membership who are members of both the Fire and EMS divisions.

Dispatch: This function is performed by the City of Gunnison (see Contacts), and serves all local emergency response agencies (Fire, EMS, Police, SAR, etc.) on the same VHF frequencies through a repeater system. Click on Dispatch

Crested Butte Fire & EMS Squad: This is a separate organization representing the volunteers, and is incorporated as a non-profit 501-c-4 organization with a mission to serve the special welfare needs of the Fire and EMS volunteers. See button above.

Funding: CBFPD funding is provided by an ad valorem tax collected annually by the Gunnison County Treasurer's Office.
